Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) in La Jolla

You are doing your absolute best to support your child. But when frequent tantrums, aggression, or defiance take over, it is easy to feel completely lost on what to say or do.

Many of the parents we work with feel like they are constantly walking on eggshells. You try your hardest to avoid whatever landmine might unpredictably set your child off. You might find that your child's behavior is starting to dictate the entire family schedule, leaving you exhausted and worrying about how they will manage as they grow older. If traditional parenting strategies like time-outs or reasoning are not working, you are not failing. You might just need a different, evidence-based approach.

What is Parent-Child Interaction Therapy?

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a highly specialized, empirically supported behavioral therapy for kids ages 2 to 7. Traditional play therapy usually involves a therapist working one-on-one with your child. PCIT is different because it focuses entirely on the relationship between you and your child in real-time.
During a session, you and your child will play together in our therapy room. Your therapist observes the interaction from behind a one-way mirror or via a live video feed. Wearing a discrete earpiece, you receive live coaching from your therapist. We guide you step-by-step on exactly how to respond to difficult behaviors, how to de-escalate meltdowns safely, and how to rebuild a positive connection with your child.

Is PCIT Right for Your Family?

As a trusted PCIT therapist in La Jolla, we use this short-term, goal-oriented program to help children who struggle with:

  • Frequent temper tantrums that disrupt daily life

  • Defiance, ignoring rules, or refusing to follow directions

  • Aggressive behaviors like hitting, biting, or kicking

  • Difficulty regulating big emotions and coping with frustration

  • High parent-child conflict that leaves everyone feeling disconnected

Before families start working with us, the child's behavior is often running the show. After completing PCIT, parents report feeling highly confident in their ability to handle whatever behavior comes their way. We would love to help you and your family get back on track.
