Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) in La Jolla

Whether you are a young adult dealing with past trauma or a parent watching your child struggle after a difficult event, trauma can turn your world upside down. You might notice intense reactions to things that never used to bother you. You might see your child or teen struggling with nightmares or shutting down completely.

Logic and reassurance just do not work when a brain is stuck in survival mode. As a parent, you might feel helpless watching your child carry this heavy burden. As a young adult, you might be exhausted from carrying it yourself. The good news is that no one has to carry it forever. We use evidence-based treatments to help the brain process these difficult memories safely.

What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly specialized therapy designed to help people heal from trauma and distressing life experiences. Standard talk therapy usually asks a client to talk about the hard things over and over again. EMDR is different. It uses the brain's natural ability to heal itself.

During an EMDR session, the therapist uses bilateral stimulation. This usually involves following the therapist's fingers back and forth with the eyes, or using gentle hand taps. This process helps the brain reprocess the traumatic memory so it is no longer emotionally overwhelming. The memory stays, but the intense physical distress attached to it fades away.

Is EMDR Right for You or Your Child?

EMDR is an incredibly effective, research-backed treatment for children, teens, and young adults who are struggling with:

  • Single-Incident Trauma: Car accidents, medical emergencies, or a sudden loss.

  • Complex Trauma: Bullying, abuse, or ongoing difficult family events.

  • PTSD Symptoms: Flashbacks, severe nightmares, or always feeling on edge.

  • Phobias and Panic: Intense, unexplained fears that disrupt daily life.

  • Negative Core Beliefs: Deeply ingrained feelings of being "unlovable" or "not safe" stemming from past experiences.
